Nov 29, 2024
TLDR: Feeling overwhelmed? Do something amazing for your future self this week—be proactive! When you know something important is coming up, take small steps to prepare. It’s easier to thrive when unexpected challenges arise if you’ve already set yourself up for success. Start with a rough plan; refine as you go. Form follows function—just get started!
Do Something Amazing for Your Future Self This Week
There’s nothing like being prepared—especially when life throws curveballs or when you know a lot is about to happen all at once. Visualization can be a powerful tool. Imagine yourself in the moments after a big challenge: What could you put in place now to unlock new possibilities and make those moments not just easier, but smoother and more productive?
This week, I want to challenge you to do something proactive for your future self. Whether it’s creating a rough process outline, prepping your space, or tackling the first step of a daunting task, even the smallest action can make a big difference.
How Proactive Preparation Saved My Day
Not long ago, I had a big consultation scheduled—a critical moment in my business as I’ve been creating fresh processes for new types of clients. On that same day, life felt like chaos. Urgent, unexpected tasks kept pulling me in different directions, and chronic pain made focus even harder.
But you know what saved me? A simple checklist I had created ahead of time. It wasn’t fancy or perfect. It was just enough to anchor me and remind me of what needed to happen next. As I worked through it, I added details and refined steps, turning my rough outline into a polished process I now use with every client (and continue to refine).
The key was starting with something. Form follows function—when you create a basic structure, you can tweak and improve it as you go. Creating new processes this way has become the foundation for a reliable, repeatable system I can trust time and time again.
How You Can Start Today
If you’re looking to do something amazing for your future self, here’s a simple way to start:
Visualize the future moment. From this perspective, ask yourself, “What will make things easier for me at this moment? What are my most important next steps to ensure success?” (e.g. send post-meeting email, put follow-up task or next meeting into calendar, organize relevant documents)
Create a rough outline. Write down the basic steps or a checklist for what you need to do. Don’t overthink it—just get the essentials down.
Refine as you go. Start small, and let the process evolve naturally.
Remember, even the simplest preparation can have a huge impact when challenges arise.
Other Tips for Success Once a List is Drafted
Think about the order. If your task has multiple parts, which steps need to come first?
Focus on what’s essential. What’s the one thing that will make everything else easier?
The most time-sensitive?
Keep it accessible. Use tools like Google Docs or a notes app so your plan is always at your fingertips.
Your Challenge: Take Action This Week
Pick one important upcoming task or challenge and take a few minutes to set your future self up for success by harnessing the power of visualization. Maybe it’s making a rough checklist, or it could just be clearing your workspace.
