TLDR: The outdoors can be your secret weapon for productivity, creativity, budget, health, and even a sense of connection. Adding just 10 minutes outside—solo or with friends—can boost your mood, help you reach your goals faster, and reconnect you to the world around you. Ready to give it a try?

Get Outside: The Powerful Benefits of Adding Nature to Your Day

It took me a while to realize how powerful a simple daily walk could be. But I’ve come to see that getting outside is now essential for almost every part of my life. Just a few minutes outdoors each day helps me stay on budget, get creative, maintain good health, and connect with people I care about.

Not only has it improved my energy, mood, and overall clarity, but it’s also become one of my favourite ways to connect with others. I’ve even become the “go-to” person for friends looking to go for a walk—getting more invites and deeper connections as a result.

Why Get Outside? Small Steps, Big Gains

Whether you’re walking solo or inviting a friend along, spending time outdoors has a way of enhancing just about every goal you may be working toward. Here’s how:

1. Budget-Friendly Benefits

Getting outside doesn’t require much—just some weather-appropriate gear (a small but worthwhile investment). It’s one of the most budget AND health-friendly ways to spend time. Instead of a lunch date, why not try a walking catch-up? It could be argued that it’s an even better way to connect (e.g., no awkward pauses while chewing!). Studies even show that time outdoors can help curb impulse spending.

Bonus Tip: “Motion is lotion,” as my physical therapists like to say. Regular movement helps keep your body healthy—and getting outside provides a free way to stay active daily. Plus, it’s great for your immune system, all potentially saving you on health expenses in the long run.

2. Boosting Energy, Creativity, and Clarity

There’s something about being outside that clears my mind, lifts my mood, and boosts my energy—often more effectively than a cup of coffee I don’t even really want late in the day.

Almost all my best lightbulb moments and decisions on next steps happen while walking outdoors. Whether I’m processing ideas while letting my mind wander or listening to inspiring content, something clicks. It’s like the combination of movement, fresh air, and the expansiveness of being outside—compared to the enclosed feeling of indoor spaces—unlocks a new perspective.

Beyond the mental benefits, these walks almost always leave me feeling better physically. Less soreness, less distraction from nagging aches—and that relief makes me far more efficient when I return to work. It’s amazing how a short walk can shift not just my mindset, but my entire day.

3. Multitasking Outdoors

Getting outside doesn’t have to be an “extra” task—it’s easy to combine with other goals. Whether it’s listening to an audiobook or lesson, catching up with a friend (even a quick voice note saying “Hi, thinking of you!”), deep breathing, or walking to a destination for a purpose, outdoor time can keep you connected and productive.

Just make sure to stay safe: skip headphones in areas with traffic, wear high-visibility gear, or consider a walking group for added security.

4. Community Connection

With our busy lives, connecting with friends and community can sometimes feel like just another chore pulling us away from other priorities. Inviting someone to join you outside keeps it simple and enjoyable. You’ll both benefit from the shared experience of spending more time outdoors while strengthening your connection to each other—and to your local area.

Getting Started: Small Steps, Big Changes

If going outside more sounds great but starting feels hard, begin with something simple. Try adding just 10 minutes of walking after lunch or dinner each day, or consider making a grocery run on foot if it’s feasible. Remember, building habits takes time—many of us struggle to turn small routines into regular practices. But each little step adds up, and before you know it, it becomes second nature.
